UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings (UKCMB)

Dr Hector Altamirano-Medina is an Associate Professor in Environmental Design and Engineering at the Bartlett School of Environment Energy and Resources, Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, Faculty of the Built Environment.

Hector is a building scientist with a broad research interest in the health and well-being impact of the built environment and a wide-ranging experience in the indoor environment and operational performance of buildings, the development of mould and humidity conditions, in-situ monitoring, field surveys and experimental setup of buildings and its components.

Hector is a trained architect with an MA in Energy, Environment and Sustainable Design and a PhD in Building Science. His research on the Humidity in Dwellings project (2005-2007) profoundly impacted the building regulations for England and Wales. The findings were integrated into Appendix A of the ADF 2010, reflecting a significant contribution to the field, which remains relevant today. He established the Healthy Infrastructure Research Group at the UCL Department of Civil and Geomatic Engineering, which received funding through the EPSRC Challenging Engineering Programme (EP/G029881/1).

He also led the AirPath: Working Group on Outdoor Environments, Pathogens in Air, and Human Health project (2009-2010), a venture supported by the joint Environment and Human Health Programme. Currently, Dr Altamirano-Medina is working in several moisture-related research projects prepared in partnership with industry and public institutions and with the strong support of the UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings (UKCMB), where he serves as Academic Director.
